You just need to know what you’re searching for.
How many times have you started searching for something important on the internet only to find that you are now, with incredible interest, staring in amazement at how many times Ted Williams was intentionally walked. Okay maybe that’s just me, but you get the idea. Like the song says, everybody’s looking for something, but what?
Some of us are looking for love, (in all the wrong places, sorry I couldn’t help myself) more spirituality, more meaning. Even when we know what we are looking for, how do we know when we have found it? I think the key is having a directness of purpose. As Zig Ziglar says “Don’t become a wandering generality, be a meaningful specific.” Everyone who reads this blog is different. You are different in the sense that you have potential for greatness because you think beyond what everyone else does, but you need a plan. If we wander through life without a road map to get to where we want to get to, one thing is for certain, we will get lost and distracted along the way. People will tell us we are crazy and whatever idea we have can’t be done. A ship with out a rudder and a charted course could end up anywhere in the ocean. Yes, it seems easy enough, but what’s easy to do is just as easy not to do.
If you are scratching your head right now, good. All that means is I got you to stop and think, which is step one of the process. Unplug from all the buzzes, bings and rings in your life because our minds need two things to create, quiet and time. Thomas Carlyle said that ” Silence is the element in which great things fashion themselves.” This will lead you to the next step which is setting goals for yourself. Short, medium and long term goals that are meaningful to you. The success in realizing the shorter term goals will build your confidence, creating positive momentum for you to realize your longer term goals. The challenge is to be somewhat realistic but yet dream big enough so that you are pushed to reach higher than you can imagine. Most people’s problem in life is not that they aim too high and miss, but that they aim too low and hit. The only limits in life are the ones we place upon ourselves. Have fun with this part of the process, who knows where you end up and what you end up doing.
Take the guitar lessons, the cooking class, learn a language, attend seminars and lectures or my personal favorite, read books, lots of them. There are so many amazing people that have gone before us who have experiences, who have realized dreams, and have attempted almost everything. They have all failed miserably and succeeded magnificently. The wonderful thing is that they have written thousands upon thousands of pages of what to do and what not to do. The blueprints are there for the taking. I always have my journal with me as well when I’m reading. The answers are all around us, we just have to pay attention and write them down. Be observant. Step out of yourself, because we get in our own way sometimes, and observe yourself being observant.
A dog can only be a dog, a horse can only be a horse, but a person can be anything. How powerful is that? Embrace that concept and take it as far as you possibly can. The gifts that we have been given are there for us all to maximize. Imagination, self awareness, conscience and most importantly free will. The combination of all of those will take you to heights that would otherwise be impossible if only we use them to their fullest.
I will leave you with this story. When JFK was exploring the possibility of putting a man on the moon and the race to space was in full force he commissioned one of the most brilliant scientists of the time. As the team assembled and JFK put the question to him and the whole room was staring at him waiting for a lengthy explanation and presentation he paused and looked at JFK and stated we need one thing and one thing only. These are five words that can and will change your life if you let them. He said we need “the will to do it.” Wow. Let that sink in and wash over you like JFK did because history tells us what happened after that.
Whatever you want to achieve, whatever you need to overcome, what ever the vision is that you want to realize to lead a full and rewarding life is possible, all you need is THE WILL TO DO IT!
You just need to know what you’re searching for…
Excellent Mike, keep going. Whe. I was doing career counseling in the 70’s there was a book entitled, “If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else”
I love this blog.
